Chakra 7: The Crown Chakra (Sahasrata)
The Sahasrata Chakra is the final chakra within the seven chakra model. I would like to preface this by letting you know that there are a slue of other chakras known to us that are considered secondary chakras which are more easily accessible when we develop an awareness of these seven primary chakras.
The Crown Chakra, or Sahasrata Chakra means, thousandfold or infinity itself and it is represented by the thousand petaled lotus. Its name and floral depiction tell us a lot about the nature of this chakra which we will explore together. This final chakra is the higher expression of the heart chakra and as we have learnt, the heart chakra is a higher expression of the root chakra. Therefor, entering into "Crown Chakra Awareness" allows us to become aware that we are one with all and one with God which is a fundamental truth that underlines many metaphysical interpretations about some of life's greatest mysteries. We can only enter into these truths if we have integrated the Heart Chakra and elevated our Root Chakra awareness.

Facts about the Crown Chakra
The thousand petaled lotus within the emblem of the crown chakra represents the nature of its connection to the Divine Realm. This crown chakra is always open to help allow higher spiritual energies to flow down into the other chakras- similarly to how our root chakra is always open and connected to the earths energies. Both of these energies are critical for our overall wellbeing. These energies flow within us at all times, wether we are aware of them or not.
This chakra is associated with the spiritual gift of Claircognizance or "Clear Knowing". Astral projection and lucid dreaming are also associated with this chakra. Lucid dreaming alone is primarily using the third eye chakra, while astral projections are a combination of both the crown and third eye chakra working in tandem.
The endocrine gland associated with the crown chakra is the pineal gland which holds many mysterious qualities. For example, science now shows us the importance of this gland for secreting serotonin and melatonin which help us to regulate our circadium rhythm which is our sleep/wake cycle. Interestingly, spiritual quotes will generally place individuals who are not aware of the truths of their crown chakra as "being asleep". The pineal gland also produces DMT- a hallucinogenic component to ayahuasca that produces psychedelic experiences. NOTE: At a later date I will be sharing my concerns with the use of psychedelic drugs but for now, if you have questions you can feel free to ask. Do note that I would suggest avoiding their use! Our body naturally creates DMT over the course of our life, which is said to be released at our time of death. We can now see just how powerful this gland is to our waking life as well as our spiritual life!
Did you know that Kings and Queens wear crowns as a symbol of having an elevated crown chakra? A monarchs crown was once a symbolic representation of their connection with Spirit and as a result, they were gifted a divine mandate to rule with ultimate authority on behalf of God. I do believe however, that this meaning has become slandered in our modern culture and that the monarchs of the world have shadowed this meaning. It should also be noted that since the incarnation of Christ Jesus, we have removed the authority of such "divine rulers" because He gave himself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. As a result of what Jesus did, we we're gifted our own connection to Jesus & God and no longer require "gurus" or "divine leaders" to guide us. We now have a direct path to God because of Jesus- therefore, we no longer need Monarchs or rulers that once represented this divine connection. We have it on our own through our own connection with God, thanks to Jesus. "The Kingdom of God is within you" - Luke 17:21 Amen!
You can now build your own connection to God and live for his honour.
Common imbalance of the Crown Chakra:
Confusion & lack of focus
Feeling disconnected from the body or world
Hyper spiritualization (being too engrossed or obsessive about spirituality to an extent that it deeply effects your every day life/ "real life")
Feeling enslaved
The clinging to any belief from anyone claiming to be a "wise person" or "shaman"
Wanting to play God (Hunger for absolute power, to want to be God like or Worshiped)
Authoritarianism
Extreme actions in a desperate attempt to proclaim how wise or gifted we are
Having an under developed heart chakra (lack of empathy, care for others, or lack of the ability to feel, give or receive heart emotions). Learn to develop these emotions via my Heart Emotions Meditation Playlist over on Yoga On DEMAND.
Becoming addicted to rituals without fully understanding them or their function
Materialism and greed
Rigidity in beliefs
Feeling disconnected from your spiritual self
Depression
Lack of purpose

Tips on bringing balance to the Crown Chakra
Colour: The colour of our Crown Chakra is often associated with Violet or White because of its nature of holding all the colours within itself.
Crystals: The crystals most often associated with the crown chakra are:
Amethyst
Clear Quarts
Selenite
Lepidolite
Sugilite
Moonstone
Charhoite
Food: Taking care of your overall health is a critical component to having a healthy crown chakra because it is the representation of the integration of the "whole being". The mind can not funtion optimally if we do not feed it the correct foods. This is why eating a balanced diet is the first key component to a healthy crown chakra, as well as eating a variety of different coloured foods to nourish the entire body and chakra system! Once you have aligned your diet with all the chakras, we can add other foods to help us connect with our Crown chakra. These foods are white in nature and include: garlic, onions, mushrooms, lychees, ginger, cauliflower, cabbage, chives, horseradish, parsnip and coconut. These foods are immune boosting and help to provide our bodies with protection against flues and colds while nourishing the body with the energy it needs to function optimally- this is especially true about the coconut and coconut water which is often used as a natural athletic or post workout drink to help replenish the bodies electrolytes. We can also target foods in the purple/violet hues which include: artichokes, purple cabbage, plums, purples grapes and blackberries. These foods have antioxidant properties which also help the body fight disease.
Herbs: Herbal teas to help nourish the crown chakra include:
Gotu Kola
Tulsi
Ginseng
Lavender
Chamomile
Sound: Singing bowls played in the note "B" can help to stimulate the same resonance of the crown chakra. Try this singing bowl sound bath HERE and see what happens.
Singing: OO-MM or AUU-UUM is the sound of the the crown chakra. This is known as the universal sound of creation. OM is often a common mantra in many yoga classes sung at the beginning and end of class. Chanting OM helps to physically tune our energy body to the sound itself while symbolically acknowledging our connection to everything and everyone in the universe. It is the sound of oneness and unity.
Essential Oils: My favourite essential oils to nourish the crown chakra are:
Frankensense
Lavender
Spikenard
Rose
Mindfulness: Balancing the crown chakra is going to require a balance Ida & Pingala channel, the development of the heart as well as a balanced solar plexus and all other lower chakras. Most of the issues relating to an imbalanced crown chakra mentioned above result because of lack of heart chakra energy as well as an imbalanced solar plexus. For example, feeling enslaved is an imbalance in the Ida (feminine channel) in the lower chakras as well as a lack of sense of self in the solar plexus. Wanting to play God or being Authoritarian is an imbalance and dominance of the pingala (masculine channel) in the lower chakras and solar plexus. Balancing these chakras with the exercises found in my other blogs about the Heart Chakra and Solar Plexus Chakra will be a key to bringing balance the Crown Chakra.
Meditation is also a fantastic tool to connect with the Divine Realm. It must be noted, that in order to do so accurately requires the heart chakra energies present throughout your meditation.
Yoga: The best yoga poses to help open and activate the crown chakra energies are:
Crane
Lotus
Corpse/Shavasana
Tree pose
Fish
Prayer
Mantra ( “I understand” , “I honour God” , “I am complete in God” , “All life is connected”)
These poses all require a deep inner focus and quieting of the mind. When we can learn to be quiet, we can begin to experience the true depth of our being. In my Yoga On DEMAND membership, we explore yoga poses, meditations and journal prompts that help to bring balance to the crown chakra.
