Keeping your health in check while traveling

I’ve recently ventured out to Thailand for three weeks with my partner and had the most amazing time. Thailand has been one of the most beautiful countries I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. The scenery of majestic rock formations surrounded by crystal clear beaches, the most exotic flowers, amazing weather and not to mention the Thai cuisine. My boyfriend and I had the chance to try delicious fruits native to the land as well as the fisherman's catch of the day served at our favourite restaurant. What I will focus on for this post is helping people to choose healthier options during their flights and traveling threw airports before arriving to their destination.

Traveling by plane

Stay Hydrated. This is the most important advice you should know about traveling. The air on a plane is very dry (10-20% humidity) which is why our bodies tend to also feel dry especially on longer flights. The average humidity a person is used to is 30-70% therefore drinking more water is crucial in preventing dehydration. Other advice for this is to try and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks such as coffee and soda as they too dehydrate the body.

Inform yourself. Prior to your flight it could be to your advantage to call your airlines and inquire about healthier meal options. Most airlines are usually happy to help customers with their dietary needs by assisting them with anything from gluten-free, vegetarian/vegan, low sodium or low-fat options.

Bring snacks. Most snacks offered on planes are usually unhealthy options. You may get the occasional apple in-between Haagen-Dazs ice cream and chocolate bars so opting to bring a bag of nuts and dried fruit may be a good idea if you’re looking to cut down on some unnecessary treats.

Stay Mindful. Its very easy to overeat on a flight. We found that the airlines we were traveling with were passing by with food so often. In their defence they go through the isles often because some people sleeping might miss a meal therefore its their job to make sure everyone is being fed. It is also your job to make sure you are aware of your true hunger vs being hungry because of boredom, stress or any other emotions you might be having during your flight. Closing your eyes for a quick meditation can be a way to check in with yourself. If stress is the issue take a deep breath. I was having a little anxiety while we were flying over the ocean but closing my eyes, and thinking of positive things was a way that helped me calm my nerves. If you are restless it’s good to stretch yourself and take a walk around the plane, it can be fun at times but watching 5 movies in a row can also remind you of the length of your flight and make you feel a little on-edge.

At the airport

Look around. I find that a lot of people usually go to the first vendor offering food to satisfy their hunger but taking a walk and looking at your options can save you from unhealthy food options. Most airports have nice bistros that offer healthy delicious meals

or pre cut fruits, veggies and salad bars.

Plan ahead. Airport websites have a list of restaurant options so you can do a little research before heading out on your trip.

Rest. Most airports are filled with cool lounges that allow flyers to rest their heads. Opting for this will help you avoid jet lag and emotional eating.

If you are travelling for business or pleasure you can find always find ways to keep a healthy lifestyle. Moderation is key, it’s okay to opt for the ice cream, coffee or chocolate bar but try to stay mindful and balance things out.
